Bella Freud is the daughter of renowned artist Lucien Freud and the great granddaughter of psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud. She was born in London and studied in Rome. She first began working for Vivienne Westwood in the 1980’s, launched her own label in 1990, and soon became widely known for her signature merino wool sweaters that are adorned with phrases like Je t’aime Jane, Ginsberg is God, and 1970.

Her clothing can be considered wearable poetry and, having created multiple short films and perfume lines, Freud herself says, “I don’t think fashion has to be restricted to clothes.” Her sweaters have been worn by icons such as Jane Birkin, Kate Moss, and Alexa Chung, and she has designed for Barbour, Jaeger, Miss Selfridge and more. Her work impeccably embodies both class and edge.
